***Changes coming soon to Feedback***

The following is an announcement with further news on the impending changes to eBay's feedback system.

Regards
Steve H

Following on from our announcement back in January, wed now like to confirm that changes to the Feedback system will come into effect on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie from 15 May.

Why are we making changes?
Were aiming to restore the trust and transparency thats at the heart of the Feedback system. We want buyers to be able to rate sellers honestly so that other buyers can tell good and bad sellers apart more easily and have total confidence in who theyre buying from.

Were also recognising sellers who attract repeat buyers this is a clear indication of good service. At the moment, a number of feedback ratings from the same buyer count as a single rating, but from 15 May onwards a sellers Feedback score will reflect all the feedback theyve been left.

The QXL UK auction site is closing on 30 May, 2008.

Shock news just in.

QXL is the second largest online auctionsite in the UK is to cease trading in the UK. Could it be that the proliferation of Auction sites in to the UK marketplace has squeezed QXL into submission. Or is it that eBay's stranglehold on the UK market was just to much of a challenge? I don't know the answer, but thought you should all be kept updated. Look out for more news as it breaks.

The full statement from QXL is published below.

Have they moved the goal posts?

In a recent address given to a select gathering of current and potential eBay sellers a view of eBay’s vision for the future was given by Lorrie Norrington. the President of eBay Global Marketplace Operations. Below is a transcript of her presentation which raises some interesting points for UK based eBay sellers.

You have only to visit one of the many eBay related forums to realise the amount of discontent there has been with the feedback arrangements. However, many sellers might question the value of the new system that does not allow the seller to leave anything other than a positive feedback.

My own view is that eBay is far more interested in increasing the number of corporate and business sellers at the expense of the small home based sellers. Many subscribers have expressed concern over some of the proposed changes especially the new fee structure. There is no doubt that for most of us the goal posts are being moved but do not take my word for it, read the transcript and see what you think.

Detailed Seller Ratings (DSR) are only a part of the equation and Ebay put a lot of emphasis on their importance. I feel there will be a lot of discussion and arguments for and against, and as always the decision to trade in this marketplace is for you and you alone. Please enjoy the article and watch this space.

Great Customer Experience?

Regards
Steve H

Weak dollar boosts eBay profits

Profits at online auction site eBay have risen 22% as the weak dollar helped boost the value of the firm's international sales.

EBay's net income rose to $459.7m (£233m) in the first three months of 2008 from $377.1m in the same period a year earlier.

Revenue rose 24% to $2.19bn, benefiting from growth in eBay's international businesses.

The effect of translating overseas currencies into dollars boosted quarterly sales by $110m.

***New Requirements for business sellers from 1st May ***

On 1st May, well be making some changes designed to ensure business sellers on eBay meet certain legal requirements. These changes will improve how buyers interact with business sellers on eBay.co.uk.

Business sellers will have to accept returns for fixed price items that are returned within 14 days of receipt.

The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000, provides for a cooling off period that allows a consumer buying online from a business to cancel their order 7 working days after receipt of the goods. We require business sellers to accept returns for a minimum period of 14 calendar days so that the buyer has enough time to let the seller know about the cancellation and post the item back.

eBay Plans to Roll Out Two Additional Feedback Changes

Last week, Lorrie Norrington, president of eBay global marketplace operations, updated sellers on the progress of the feedback protection plan announced in January. After the initial announcement, some sellers boycotted the auction site in February, and went on to organize another boycott expected to start May.

In her recent public announcement, Norrington said that sellers have made it clear that eBay needs to do even more to protect sellers from dishonest buyers who use the feedback system as a weapon. As a result, eBay is adding two feedback policy changes to be rolled out in May, which Norrington says will better protect sellers from this kind of behavior. In the public eBay post Norrington provided sellers with the following details:

PAYPAL SCAM / FRAUD WARNING- by: dave-shop

The news item enclosed is from a very disgruntled ebayer and in no way reflects the views of myself, or UK Auctionline. I felt it was worth publishing just in case anyone else is experiencing the same sort of problem.

Regards
Steve H

These 'people' purchased items from me and a few days later once they received the item, lodged a false claim via Paypal to extort a refund from them. Paypal being there usual helpful selves immediately 'stole' the funds from my account so they can give them back to the scammer's.

Neither of these maggots has grounds for a Paypal complaint and this has now been passed to the police as a fraud case and the FSA / financial ombudsman both informed.

I am awaiting the outcome of Paypal's final investigation but suspect it will be the same as usual - give the buyer a refund and leave the seller out of pocket for the best part of £300.

UK Auctionline is back!

It is some time since UK Auctionline was updated, October last year to be exact. That has been due to a combination of personal illness and my impending retirement. Now though I am pleased to say that I am in a position to hand over the reins of UK Auctionline to a very good friend of mine, Steve Haddock.

By the way when I say "friend" I mean a real friend not one of those Internet "friends" you read about in all those Internet marketing sales letters. Steve has been a protege of mine for some time and is a fellow Grimsby Town supporter. (Did I mention we are only one game away from Wembley?)

I am sure that Steve will bring a new insite and enthusiam to UK Auctionline and take it to the next level.

On my part I would just like to thank you all for your support over the last 6 years and wish you all success with eBay and your other Internet ventures.

Latest eBay News

There has been quite a bit in the press this weekend about fraud on eBay. The Sunday People highlighted the case of Stacey Humble who lost £4,600 when she tried to buy a VW Beetle on eBay.

Interestingly this week the Western Mail carried a letter from Mathew Phillips who was recently convicted and imprisoned for defrauding eBayers by selling non existent Ryder Cup tickets. Writing from his prison cell he gives his side of the story. For more information.
If you are interested in buying a dress worn by the late Princess Diana you have until Wednesday to get your bid in. Diana wore the chiffon gown and matching neck scarf, both designed by Catherine Walker, to the Cannes Film Festival in 1987 and the London opening of "Miss Saigon" in 1989. To read more…

Finally today I came across an very amusing but unofficial “eBay song” on YouTube.

How to avoid the eBay Scams

The truth is that nearly all eBay transaction go through without the slightest trouble. But there are people out there who are just waiting for an opportunity to relieve you of your money without giving anything in return.

At least once a week there is a report of somebody being jailed for operating some type of eBay scam. There are many different types of scams such as selling non existent goods to persuading the seller to send items before they receive the money.

You may wonder how people can get taken in by some of the more obvious scams on eBay but they do. The obvious way of avoiding these scams is to know what signs to look for. I have recently coma across an article from non profit making Consumer Reports.org called Winning at eBay. Read this and you should be well prepared to
spot and avoid being cheated. To read the article go to http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/personal-finance/ebay-8-07/overview/0708_ebay_ov_1.htm

Ebay Auction Weekly News

As I reported earlier the “General Lee” car from the Dukes of Hazard TV series was recently listed on eBay and attracted a bid of nearly £10 million dollars. However, it was no surprise to discover that someone hacking into another ebay members site had made this bid. As a result the car is going up for auction again but this time bidders will have to give proof of identity.

Another car attracting some attention on eBay is a Chrysler Grand Voyager once owned by Tony and Cherie Blair. The 1998 vehicle originally cost in the region of £30,000 but is starting off at £3,000 on the auction site. The burgundy car is full of extras such as two TVs, video, CD in player and high tech headphones.

Police has sized a laptop computer sold on ebay after it became known that the computer contained details about children who had been in care in the Southend area between 1999 and 2003. This occurred after the council sold on some old computers to a resale company.

Ebay are getting flack at the moment for allowing items made of ivory to be openly sold through their site even though ivory trading is illegal. There have also been complaints once more about the sale of pop concert tickets at inflated prices, especially those raising money for charity.

We are less than a month away now from this years eBay Live event taking place in Boston, Mass between 14th –16th June. If you are interested in attending tickets are available for $75 if you register before Friday 25th May and $100 after that.

Finally this week hard up soldier Cpl Trevor Coult has put up his Military Cross medal and 3 others that he was awarded for sale on ebay. The Military Cross is the third highest award for bravery after the VC and George Cross. Cpl Coult was awarded his MC following service in Iraq. The military authorities have taken a very dim view of the proposed sale because under Queens Regulations it is illegal for a serving member of the armed forces to sell any medals they have been awarded. The listing has now been removed from eBay

EBay- Winners and losers

Two stories have come out this week that show that on eBay sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Let start off with the losers, they are all those people who queued outside Topshop on the 30th April to buy their 5 Kate Moss design dresses and then rushed home to list them on eBay.

It appears that Kate’s designed have not fired the imagination of the fashion conscious young things and the dresses are proving hard to shift online. One example is the red dress that Kate wore herself for the opening. Only 100 copies were available and they all sold out for £195 each. Many subsequently appeared on eBay but are not selling well and current bids are just over the £100 mark.

This weeks winner was sci fi fan Tony Alleyne who has sold his Star Trek style one bedroom flat in Leicestershire for the staggering sum of £425,000. After his marriage broke up Tony decieed to turn his flat into a replica of the flight deck of the Starship Voyager. This has taken him 2 years and around £30,000 but his efforts have paid off. Having purchased the flat 10 years ago for £27,000 and with similar properties selling for around £80,000 Tony listed it on eBay for £130,000.

The successful bidder is reported to be a Birmingham businessman who wishes not surprisingly to remain anonymous.

EBay – MPs call for ban on the sale of tickets

A report in the Sunday newspaper The People suggests that some MPs want the sale of event tickets on eBay to be banned. What seems to have caused this latest cal was the fact that £45 tickets for the Take That concert were being offered online for £200 within 30 minutes of them going on sale.

Shaun Woodward the Culture Minster is said to favour a voluntary code of practice whereby ticket buyers would register personal details that could then be checked against pin numbers.

In an interview on TV earlier this week an eBay spokesman said that as far as the company was concerned the sale of tickets was legitimate because the person offering the ticket was the actual owner of that ticket and had a right to offer it for sale if they wished.

One point that The People highlighted was the fact that UK consumer laws do not cover tickets bought online so purchasers would have no claim for a refund if an event was cancelled.

EBay University announces its plans for 2007

eBay have recently announced their plans for 2007. There appears to be only 4 one day venues this year.

April 21st at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry

June 9th in London

Sept 22nd Glasgow

Nov 10th Manchester.

The price this year is £49 per day. This is quite a price increase, when I attended a University event at Sheffield a couple of years ago the fee was a very reasonable £15. Last year it rose to £30 and now a big jump to £49. Even so I think that compared to the price being charged by some marketers for eBay information material this still represents good value.

The event will run from 10 a.m to 6 p.m. with registration from 9 a.m.

For this unfamiliar with eBay university they are day long series of eBay-centric classes aimed at helping you get the most out of your eBay selling. Staffed by eBay staff, PowerSellers and industry experts, its also a chance to meet fellow eBayers, share your insight and get the opportunity to pick up tips and tricks in a unique environment. Over 5000 people have attended these events so far.

eBay get knuckles wrapped by ASA

Ebay has fallen foul of the UK advertising regulations and had its knuckles wrapped by the Advertising Standards Authority(ASA).
The problem stemmed from an online advertisement, which suggested that coffee machine could be purchased on eBay for less than £100, designer chairs for £50 and Le Creuset pots for less than £80. But one eagle-eyed surfer went to the eBay site and was unable to find the items at that price and reported eBay to the ASA.
The ASA felt that most users of eBay would understand the nature of the eBay website but nevertheless stated that “all the items depicted in the ad should have been available for the whole time the ad appeared, and as soon as the items were no longer available the ad should have been withdrawn"
Despite the finding the ASA do not appear to have imposed any penalty on eBay so one presumes they consider this to be a minor infringement of the rules. A a spokesman for eBay stated "we have duly noted the ASA's ruling".

eBay on Watchdog

It was only a matter of time before someone would
start to complain about the number of designer fakes
being offered for sale on eBay.

Last night(7th November) the influential BBC program “Watchdog”
featured the issue citing examples of fake products
they had purchased on eBay. The impression the
program gave was that eBay could do much more to
solve this problem.

The fact that eBay were not prepared to put a spokesperson
onto the program to answer the points raised was also
somewhat damning. Presenter Nicky Campbell questioned
whether if this trade in counterfeit goods could tip the balance
and frighten customers away from eBay.

One thing eBay can be sure of if they do not take decisive action
the problem will not go away. I suspect we will soon be seeing
similar features in the media in the coming weeks. Not what eBay
of their sellers want in the run up to the busy Christmas season.

I have not seen this scam before

I am posting this blog to you to warn of a new scam
that I came across today. When I checked my e-mails this
morning there was one supposedly from Paypal confirming
a subscription payment for $39.

I pay for several services, web hosting and site memberships
through Paypal but this was supposedly a payment to some kind
of spyware company in Germany. There was a button below
which you needed to click on if you felt this payment was an error.
When you click on the button another very genuine Paypal type
of page appears and asks you to sign in with your e-mail address
and password.

This was when the alarm bells began to ring and I went back
to my Paypal account and checked if such a payment had in
fact been made. There was no mention of any such payment so this
was obviously another attempt to collect my Paypal password.

I know there are a lot of various spoof e-mails about and I like
To think that I am pretty sharp in spotting them but this one was so
clever it almost got under my guard. Be on the look out for anything
similar in your e-mail and if you get one forward it straight away
to spoof@paypal.co.uk

Oltiby - A Reverrse Auction with a difference

I came across an interesting site recently, www.oltiby.com. This is a unique reverse auction site. In simple terms a buyer place details of an item they want to buy and the maximum price they are prepared to pay. Would be sellers can then send details of the lowest price they are prepared to accept for that item and the seller who offers the lowest price is the winner. All that is left then is for the seller and buyer to get together to complete the auction.

The guys at Oltiby tell me that they are a global company and as most sellers accept Paypal there should be few problems with payment where ever you are in the world. I have not tried the system yet but it looks as though it could be a bit of fun and you could find yourself with a bargain or two. I would be interested to hear of your experiences if you do give it a try.

Auction Revolution Sale

Terry Gibbs sent me a note earlier saying he is running a sale on
his Auction Revolution package. I think Terry's package is one of
the better eBay packages, and the discount makes it even better.

The Auction Revolution is designed for the beginner, but contains
a wealth of details to help any eBay seller get better results.
There is even a free quiz on the site to help you determine if
the package will help you.

I've put one of Terry's articles below so you can learn more
about him. Once you've read the article, go take the free quiz
and see if you need the Auction Revolution.

Here's the article:

Nine Simple eBay Selling Hints

By Terry Gibbs

Some of these eBay hints will save you money, others will result
in higher prices. Either way, these will help you run more
profitable eBay auctions.

1. Write a simple description and do not clutter your auction
with unneeded items like animated Gifs, and colored
backgrounds. Remember, you are selling not entertaining.

2. Charge a flat rate for shipping, and mention the shipping
costs prominently within your auction description.

3. Write a title that accurately describes your item. Use
manufacturers name and model number within the title if
applicable.

4. Write a detailed description that allows prospective
bidders to make a decision about purchasing the item. A
basic tip is the description can never be too long as long
as it is describing the item.

5. Include large clear photographs. Invest in some lights and
a quality camera. Your investment will pay for itself in
higher eBay selling prices within only a few auctions.

6. Host your own pictures. By hosting your own pictures, you
will save money, and, more importantly, be able to use as
many pictures as you need to adequately show eBay bidders
your item. This is the simplest thing to do, and yet 70
percent of eBay sellers ignore this simple tip.

7. Optimise your images for the web. Many sellers use the
highest resolution settings on their cameras and generate
huge files that download very slowly. Computer monitors
only show 72DPI, any extra detail is just a waste of the
bidder's time.

8. List your item in the most appropriate category. Many
buyer's only search eBay by looking at listings within
categories. If you are not in the right eBay category you
will not be seen by lots of potential bidders and you item
may end up selling for less than it's worth.

9. Systemize your eBay selling. Using a system to sell on eBay
will lower the amount of time spent selling each item, and
insure you don't forget any important activities.

The Auction Revolution explains all of these hints in
greater detail.

Take the free quiz and see if the Auction Revolution will
help you at:

iSold It, the leading drop-off chain in the U.S. and one of the world’s fastest growing franchises, has touched down at London Olympia for the British & International Franchise Exhibition.

5p Listing Day on eBay.co.uk

eBay have announced a 5p listing day for Thursday 3rd November. Any auction items except Autos can be listed for just 5p between 00.01 until 23.59 on this day. Buy it now items and Dutch auctions are excluded but you can list an item in 2 categories for just 10p.

If you have items that you want to clear out then this is a good time to put them online. Personally I am not a great fan of these promotions because I think they attract
a considerable amount of offers that are posted more in hope than expectation. This can easily put browsers off wading through pages and pages of listings to try and
find what they are looking for. Last year I talked to one guy who claimed to have put up over 1300 items on a similar 5 p day and he sold less than 100 items.

But lets face it a listing for up to 10 days for 5p is a bargain but of course all the
other fees still apply. For more details go to http://pages.ebay.co.uk/sell/FLD0311055pA/

This week Google, confirmed that it is testing a classified listing service called Google Base.

Business Identification Feature

eBay intend to launch a new feature called Business Identification that will let buyers know they are buying from a business seller rather than an individual. It will also allow business sellers to easily identify themselves as such on View Item Pages and their Member Profile.

Once the feature launches in October whenever you see “Registered as a Business Seller” you will know that the seller is registered as a business with eBay and has to adhere to certain laws and practices.
If you have already registered your VAT details with eBay you will automatically be added to the list of Business sellers when the scheme comes into operation. This is not a totally unexpected move and it will obviously have implications for many eBay sellers. At UK Auction Line we intend to study the details and will add a new article about this feature in the next day or two in the sellers section of the web site

New "Want It Now" Feature

Last month eBay introduced a new feature designed to help members to buy and sell

Unique, hard to find items. This feature is called "Want it Now"

With Want It Now, buyers can now tell sellers exactly what they are looking for when they are unable to find it on the site. Sellers can then browse through these requests to find buyers for their items, as well as get new ideas for what items are in demand.

This could be a very useful tool for sellers and a good way to discover items that are in demand. It is worth going to the "Want It Now" and browse through the categories that you are interested in. To visit this area and the helpful tutorial that eBay supply go to the EBay home page-Help- At the bottom of the page you will see a section called Speciality Site.
