I was talking to a friend of mine recently, Chris McRae who specialises in selling leather coats and jackets through ebay and he was telling me that he has never been busier. The vibes I am getting from subscribers also indicate that trade on eBay is booming. I hope you are doing well with your products.

Google launch Google Base. How will it effect eBay?

On November 17 th Google launched its new data base service Google Base. This is a service that allows you to upload just about any information you wish for no cost.

It did not take eBayers in the USA to quickly realise the potential of this new service

And according to an article in the 6th December edition of the AuctionBytes News Flash some of the top Power Sellers were quickly loading their entire inventory up on to the service with link to either their web sites or ebay stores.

So what exactly is Google Base? Google themselves describe it as a place were you can easily submit all types of online and offline content that they will host and make searchable online. You can describe you wish with attributes, which help people find your item when they search the database. The big plus is that you item could feature in he main Google search engine as well as Froogle and Google Base.

Unlike eBay Google Base positively encourage you to add links to your web site, eBay store or even your eBay listing. This opens up a whole host of possibilities for

Ebay sellers.

Google has built the system around “labels” and “attributes” or keywords and descriptions as nearly everyone else calls them. When you submit a listing you enter up to ten labels,(keywords or phrases,) which will help searchers, find relevant listings. You then enter the Attribute, which is again words, or phrases that help describe the characteristics and quality of your item.

The whole process of listing is quick and simple and you entry will normally be online within a couple of hours. If, as most eBayers will, you ant to supply many listing Google even offer a bulk upload file. There seem to be little limitation on the type and nature of the content or items you can upload but a full list of prohibited items can be found at http://base.google.com/base/base_policies.html.

It should be emphasised that the system is still in its early stages and one or to problems have been encountered mainly concerning pornography and security but

I am sure these will be resolved very quickly. But one question that has to be asked is what effect I this new service going to have on eBay trading?

My first thought was that you could submit all your eBay listing to Google Base with a link either to your eBay listing or eBay store. And I am sure this is what a lot of eBayers will use Google Base for but everyone. If you already have a web site or are planning to build displaying your products then surely it will make more sense to direct visitors straight to your web site. This way you will avoid incurring any eBay fees or charges. Whether you use Google Base to direct more visitors to your auctions or use it to bypass eBay all together there is no doubt that this new service could be an important weapon in our sales armoury. It amazes me that only 6% of eBay Sellers actually have an About Me page.

Probably only 1% realise how much additional income an About Me page can actually generate and are using it to its maximum advantage.

This month I am pleased to be able to include an e-mail that I received from subscriber Lynda Hill in which she gives her thoughts on some of the points that I raised last month. Also in this issue I am pleased to include an article by an American contributor Kirsten Hawkings

This is what Lynda had to say:

It's not often I feel able to make comments on your newsletter, but I'm in the right mood this evening. Nice comments I hope!

1. Postage. Although it costs £4.99 a month, the convenience of Royal Mail's SmartStamp far outweighs that small amount. I can, having used my scales, print off the exact' postage for my item as and when I want to (as long as I post it by the next day. Certainly worth a trial . Standard (ie non-recorded) items can simply be popped in the post box. All types of postage requirements are handled by this program, and it's excellent when you need to work out your postage for listings.

2. Talking of scales. I used to use standard kitchen-type scales, but found when I went to the Post Office that sometimes the postage was either too high or too low. I have now purchased digital scales (from Viking) and they are much, much better. Only cost about £25-ish.

3. On packing - why go to the trouble of copying address labels when you can buy some 'documents enclosed' pouches to stick on your envelope and use the eBay invoices. Saves time and looks much more professional. Mind you, the eBay addressing system leaves a lot to be desired. (I've found the invoice/packing slip style can be trimmed and folded quite easily.)

I actually bought a box of 1000 small (12.5 x 11cm) and sold half in packs of 20/50 on ebay, so I recouped my cost while still having the benefit myself. (Not everyone needs 100 or more).

4. Return address - must be more cost-effective to have Viking rattle off a rubber stamp for this. Oh, and I also make sure the eBay record number is on the outside of the packet so I can trace any returns more quickly on eBay.

5. Finally, eBid. I've joined this after an AuctionBytes article. I haven't signed up for a sellers account yet as I'm not convinced there are many people actually buying anything. I'm keeping a weather-eye on it.

Finally, it is thanks to the encouragement I received from reading your newsletters that I am now entering my 2nd year as a eBayer, David. Doing it in my spare time means I cannot devote the effort it really needs, but it's certainly keeping our heads above water every month. I actually sell items I ship in from the USA; I've been with my supplier for a year now and we have an excellent relationship, although I am currently experiencing a shipping delay of 4 weeks for about £1000 of potential sales! (That shows one needs to carry several lines at a time.) If I can make £600+ a month with two lines, it isn't rocket science to see how that could double with minimum effort.) Just takes courage to get started in the first place.

What Else Belongs On Your Ebay Shipping Box?

The quickest answer I feel I should give to this question is this: not your handwriting! Scrawling addresses on boxes with a pen is extremely amateurish, and you shouldn’t do it. Print your own labels instead. But what should you put on them?

The buyer’s address: This might sound obvious, but you need to make sure the full address is there, including country and zip or postal code. Make sure you spell their name correctly, too, as they might be a little insulted if you don’t.

The eBay item number: Write this somewhere discreet and quite small, in this form: ‘Item number: 123456789’. Under the address is a good place. This makes it easy for the buyer to find the auction again if they need to look at it for any reason.

Your logo: Putting your logo on the shipping box looks professional, and lets your buyers see what it is that has arrived. A good logo can make the whole package look very nice, and can help build recognition of your business.

Your address: It’s worth putting your own address on the box in case the item can’t be delivered and needs to be returned to you. It looks good to write this under your logo, as it reinforces the impression that you’re a real business with a real address, not some shady operation.

Stamps: If you start to sell on eBay in a significant quantity, you might consider buying a postage meter. Again, this is a matter of looking professional – it looks much better than having stamps stuck everywhere. It also saves you from having to weigh your items at the post office and buy stamps there.

The ‘eBay Items’ Debate.

Some sellers like to mark their shipping boxes with a phrase like ‘eBay items’, while some feel that this is an unsafe practice that could mark their boxes out to get stolen or interfered with in the post. Whether you’re willing to risk it is up to you – it’s probably better to be safe than sorry, though, and there will be few of your customers who get so many packages that they won’t know what yours is.

And Inside?

You’ll probably find it worth printing off a ‘receipt’ from eBay – the confirmation of payment page – and putting it in the envelope. If you want to make your customers feel even better about having ordered from you, you can also include a compliments slip, featuring your logo, your website address and a message like ‘Thank you for your order. Please contact me if there are any problems. [Your name].’

Always remember: the more they like what they get, the more likely they are to come back and order again from you in the future.

In the next email, we’ll look at exactly that, using a strategy you might not have considered. You can make backend sales over and over again, simply by emailing buyers with good offers for things you think they’re going to need. See you there.
