I was talking to a friend of mine recently, Chris McRae who specialises in selling leather coats and jackets through ebay and he was telling me that he has never been busier. The vibes I am getting from subscribers also indicate that trade on eBay is booming. I hope you are doing well with your products. Chris and I have also been busy creating a DVD and CD program called Blast Your Way to eBay Wealth. THis is a pretty large package consisting of 3 DVDS and 5 audio and Audio video CDs featuring, Chris, Louis Allport and myself. This should be available in the new year and we are looking for some joint venture partners to help us launch this. If you are interested give me a call or send an e-mail. I was watching a BBC programme the other night and at the end I heard the presenter ask viewers to send in any horror stories that they might have about eBay. So I assume we can expect another of these "shock horror is it safe to trade on eBay?" programme's soon. There is another 5p listing day coming up on Saturday for Buy it Now Items. This could be a good chance to get some of your Christmas related items up for sale. Talking of Christmas let me take this opportunity to wish all subscribers a very happy holiday and wish you a successful and Prosperous New Year

NEWS:GoogleBase
Google launch Google Base. How will it effect eBay?
On November 17 th Google launched its new data base service Google Base. This is a service that allows you to upload just about any information you wish for no cost. It did not take eBayers in the USA to quickly realise the potential of this new service And according to an article in the 6th December edition of the AuctionBytes News Flash some of the top Power Sellers were quickly loading their entire inventory up on to the service with link to either their web sites or ebay stores. So what exactly is Google Base? Google themselves describe it as a place were you can easily submit all types of online and offline content that they will host and make searchable online. You can describe you wish with attributes, which help people find your item when they search the database. The big plus is that you item could feature in he main Google search engine as well as Froogle and Google Base. Unlike eBay Google Base positively encourage you to add links to your web site, eBay store or even your eBay listing. This opens up a whole host of possibilities for Ebay sellers. Google has built the system around “labels” and “attributes” or keywords and descriptions as nearly everyone else calls them. When you submit a listing you enter up to ten labels,(keywords or phrases,) which will help searchers, find relevant listings. You then enter the Attribute, which is again words, or phrases that help describe the characteristics and quality of your item. The whole process of listing is quick and simple and you entry will normally be online within a couple of hours. If, as most eBayers will, you ant to supply many listing Google even offer a bulk upload file. There seem to be little limitation on the type and nature of the content or items you can upload but a full list of prohibited items can be found at http://base.google.com/base/base_policies.html. It should be emphasised that the system is still in its early stages and one or to problems have been encountered mainly concerning pornography and security but I am sure these will be resolved very quickly. But one question that has to be asked is what effect I this new service going to have on eBay trading? My first thought was that you could submit all your eBay listing to Google Base with a link either to your eBay listing or eBay store. And I am sure this is what a lot of eBayers will use Google Base for but everyone. If you already have a web site or are planning to build displaying your products then surely it will make more sense to direct visitors straight to your web site. This way you will avoid incurring any eBay fees or charges. Whether you use Google Base to direct more visitors to your auctions or use it to bypass eBay all together there is no doubt that this new service could be an important weapon in our sales armoury. It amazes me that only 6% of eBay Sellers actually have an About
Me page.
Probably only 1% realise how much additional income an About Me page can actually generate and are using it to its maximum advantage. To discover how much money you are missing out on visit The Silent Sales Machine Feedback: Email from LyndaThis month I am pleased to be able to include an e-mail that I received from subscriber Lynda Hill in which she gives her thoughts on some of the points that I raised last month. Also in this issue I am pleased to include an article by an American contributor Kirsten Hawkings This is what Lynda had to say:
Feature Extra ReadingFeature :The eBay Survival GuideA review by Dave Bromley When I was in the Armed Forces we were always being issued with “Survival Guides”. How to survive in the Jungle, the Desert, and the sea are just 3 titles that I remember. But if there is one environment that has been crying out for a survival guide it is eBay. So I was intrigued when I got my hands on Michael Banks latest book “The eBay Survival Guide”. I soon realised that it was a cut above many of the recent eBay books. As someone who comes across literally hundreds of books and reports about online auctions every year I expected this would just be another expanded version of the ebay site map. But I was wrong; this book is an informative and riveting read. It is a fact that it is possible to make a very good living selling products through eBay. However, it is equally true that if you either go about it in the wrong way or in some cases are just plain unlucky you can lose money. One of the biggest causes of this happening is the person not fully understanding how the market place works or knowing what to do if things go wrong. After reading the “The eBay Survival Guide” you should be much better equipped to tackle the day to day business of buying and selling on eBay. One area that Michael covers in full detail is a subject that other books hardly mention and that is how to get the most out of the eBay search function. There are two detailed sections on both buying and selling on eBay. The “Do’s and Don’ts chapters for both buyers and sellers not only show you the correct way to approach the task but also the traps to avoid. The book is written in an easy to read no nonsense manner and you will find plenty of useful tips. One in particular that I liked was Michael’s suggestion on how to react to a customer who claims that a sent item never arrived. To find out what it is you will have to buy the book. There are two chapters that everyone who buys or sells on eBay should read. They are “Shills, Sleazes and Seller Scams” and “Bogus products and Money making Scams”. Being forewarned is being forearmed and after reading these chapters you should be able to avoid the pitfalls that can trap the unwary. The book covers a wide range of subjects including effective bidding strategies, buying stock to sell a dhow to create compelling listings. Whether you are new to online auction or an old hand this is one item you should definitely add to your eBay Library. This 260+ page paperback is published by No Starch and is available from Amazon.com for $13.57 (£7.99). And whether you are a new comer or an experienced eBayer I think you will find this book interesting. Dave's Final ThoughtseBay have announced the introduction of an eBay Marketplace Research. Information Service for Buyers and Sellers. It costs between £1.99 and £12.99 per month depending upon the depth of information required. I have not had a chance to test out this new feature yet. However, my first thought is that why should we have to pay for a feature which is designed to increase sales and therefore eBays revenue. If anyone has tried this new tool I would welcome their thoughts. For more information about this feature go to eBay |
