UK Auctionline Newsletter No. 45

10th October 2005

NEWS | Message from Dave

Hello <$firstname$>
Welcome to the 45 th edition of the UK Auctionline Newsletter, and an especially big welcome to my new subscribers. I have been very pleasantly surprised at the recent increase in subscribers. I think this may be in part due to the changes we have introduced to the UK Auctionline web site. If you have not visited it recently you should really go and take a look.

We are continually adding new items to our database of eBay related articles bank.

I have also placed direct links to eBay wholesale offers and packaging suppliers, which could help you, save some money. Later this month we are adding a new 15-minute monthly audio talk to the site.

Other plans include updating the product and books pages and here you can help. If you have bought an eBay related book or product why not let me know what you thought of it. I will be happy to publish your comments. Also if you have written or produced an eBay related product I will be happy to review it and if I think it will be useful to my subscribers I will feature it in the newsletter.

In this issue I look at a new and rather unique eBay help site that has been launched by Michael Sheriff. Called “The Auction Help Desk” which is a members site that offers unlimited e-mail and as an upgrade you can also have a “private” members only telephone support line. Members also have access to Michael’s library of eBay related articles. For more information visit http://www.theauctionhelpdesk.com.

Feature| The 5 Mistakes that lose you money on eBay

by Dave Bromley

I am often asked by subscribers to UK Auctionline web site to have a look at their eBay listings. This is usually because they are not doing as well selling their items as they had hoped. When I go and look at the listing I will often find that they have made one or more of the common mistakes that deter bidders.

1. Too many negatives. Some people, especially newcomers to eBay have a very real fear of being cheated or ripped off. Because of this they apply negatives in their listing. This can be in the form of a long list of types of payments they wont accept or conditions that they apply. Something else I have seen is the warning that thee seller will not be responsible for any item lost in the post. Even worse are threats such as negative feedback if payment is not made within a certain time after the auction ended. These sorts of restrictions and threats are a great big turnover to any potential bidder.

2. High shipping charges. Most reasonable people are happy to pay something over the cost of postage to cover packing materials. But as I saw the other day someone who charging £5 to ship a £2.99 CD, that is pushing it a bit. If you doubt how the average bidder views hyped up shipping costs just go and read the comments on any eBay forum and see what buyers feel about it.

3. Not using a Gallery Photograph. I assume that no one who is serious about selling on eBay would consider putting up any listing without a picture. I cannot think of any item that would not benefit from a photograph. But there are still a great number of sellers who do not use the gallery feature to have a photograph next to their listing in the search results. eBay’s own figures show that the use of a gallery photograph can increase the final bid figure by as much as 12%.

4. Setting you opening bid price too high. If you want to attract the most bids and therefore a higher final price for your item you should not set too high an!
opening bid price. A low opening price attracts casual browsers who place a bid just on the off chance of getting a bargain. Once a few bids have been entered other people start noticing and come to your listing to see what it is all about. Then before you know it, the price is shooting up. However, if you start with too high a price you could end up as one of the many listings that attract no bids at all.

5. Not communicating. I know some eBay sellers who really resent having to answer e-mails. In fact I know some who just do not answer any questions from sellers. How stupid is this? A question from a seller is a great opportunity for you to build up rapport with a potential buyer. A quick and pleasant response will almost certainly encourage bids whilst a curt or a non-reply will not.

The bottom line is that eBay is a numbers game, the more people you can get to bid on your items the higher the price they will achieve. Therefore it is important to do everything you can to encourage bidding not trying to deter it. top

Feature: Selling through Amazon.co.uk

Amazon is busy promoting its Amazon Marketplace at the moment. I have always thought of Amazon as booksellers but the marketplace allows you to sell new, used, collectable and refurbished items along side Amazons own range of new products. It is a good outlet for books, CDs, DVDs, videos, video games and electronics items . If you have ever purchased a book from Amazon you may have noticed that they also offer second-hand copies of the book as well as new copies. These second hand copies belong to people like us who have submitted them for sale.

Amazon.co.uk Marketplace is not an auction; you set the price of every item you list and obviously the more competitive your price is the more likely you are to make a sale.

Here's how it works:

After you list an item it is displayed on the page on which we sell the item new, in the blue 'More Buying Choices' box. Items listed by individual sellers remain for 60 days, after which you can re-list them if they haven't sold. Items offered by Pro-merchant sellers remain until they are sold or until you remove the listing.

When your item sells, Amazon send you an e-mail to notify you that payment has been taken from the buyer. You must dispatch the item to the buyer within two days of receiving this e-mail.

Your earnings are deposited into your Amazon Payments account and funds are transferred to your bank account on a 14 day cycle.

The costs are 86p per item completion fee plus 17.25% 0f the selling price. There is also an admin fee for the postal charges which are collected by Amazon at the time of purchase from the buyer. This ranges from 16p for DVD up to £1.64 for an item of software.

For serious sellers they have a Pro Merchant scheme whereby for a monthly fee of £28.75 you avoid the completion fee although you still pay the 17.25% selling fee. This would be worth it if you aimed at selling more than 30 items a month through Amazon. For more details visit www.amazon.co.uk and click the “Sell Your Stuff” button.

News| Global Sources

By Dave Bromley

In the Summer at eBay Live the big annual gathering held in San Jose eBay announced that they had partnered with Global Sources to promote a scheme whereby Power Sellers could import goods from China and the Far East in smaller quantities than the company normally sell them in.

I discovered this reading Skip McGrath’s excellent newsletter (www.auction-sellers-resource.com) but it was not certain that sellers in the UK could avail themselves. I e-mailed the company and they told me they ship to all destinations. They told me that when you place an item in the shopping cart it will give an estimated shipping cost based on a shipment to the USA. But when you checkout, based on your shipping address, the system will indicate the actual shipping cost.

The web site is www.globalsourcesdirect.com

PRODUCT| Sellling eBay Information on eBay

One of the best information subjects to sell on eBay is anything connected with eBay itself. I still have a few copies of my 5 CD eBay pack consisting of:
  1. How to make Big Money on eBay – Double CD video/Audio Program
  2. The Path to Power Selling on eBay – Audio CD
  3. eBay- Maximim Profit for Minimum Work – Audio CD
  4. How to Buy and Sell on eBay- Audio CD

That is a total of 5 CDs that come with resale rights which mean you can offer them for sale on eBay or the Internet, (or any where else for that matter.)

To avoid flooding the market I am only offering 20 of these packages for sale and once they are gone that is it.

The cost of this package is just £59.95 which is very cheap when you consider we have been selling “How to Make Big Money on eBay” by itself with no resale rights for £49.95. To order make a payment through Paypal ( e-mail address: daveatebay@aol.com) for £59.95 or call me on 01472 593591 to pay by credit card.

FEATURE| Professional Ebay Auction Templates Can Boost Your Ebay Sales

By Thomas Haselhorst

Do you like to sell on eBay? It’s easy and fun, isn’t it? In fact, it’s one of the easiest online business you can start almost overnight, without any major investments. That’s the best thing about it. But do you also know that only the minority of the people selling on eBay are really successful and that most of them quit after a little while or run it only as a hobby. Yes, that’s true. Hard facts, but the truth. So, what are the secrets of those successful eBay sellers? Well, the most important thing to become successful is a unique product. That’s the first thing. In case you don’t have a unique product, you can sell products which are in high demand, eg. children clothing, designer clothing, digital cameras, etc. But you have to keep in mind that your item has to compete with 100 similar products – maybe even to a better price. So if you are selling products which are highly competitive, then your sales letter has to be DIFFERENT. No, not only different, it has to be UNIQUE. And not only unique!! Your listing has to be PROFESSIONAL.

Let me tell you about our experiment. We have tried various listings for the same item. And what do you think which listing got the most bids? Right, listings with a professional UNIQUE design end up with 30-40% more bids. Can you imagine that? It was exactly the same item. Just the design of the sales letter can make a massive difference in the end price you may get. It’s just amazing. We have saying in German: “Das Auge isst mit”. The translation is something like: “If it looks nice it has to taste better”. Well, as we know this is not always true though, but that’s the psychology of our human brain. If the overall impression of the food is good, an impulse is sent to the brain: This has to taste good – I want to try that. It’s the same thing with buying in a shop or on eBay. If the auction website of the item you are looking at looks nice, the product has to be good and it’s more likely that you click on the “Bid now” button. We have seen that many times and especially with our little experiment.

So, if you use professional looking eBay auction templates for your listings, you will be surprised how this may boost your eBay business. Try to modify your templates and see which perform better. You will notice that a tiny change can make a huge difference. Keep track which templates has generated what prices and compare after a month. You’ll see that some templates do really well and some don’t. Be creative and modify your templates. But be careful! Don’t overdo it though with bright colours an a dozen animated gifs. No, that’s not what the buyer wants to see. They want to have a clear and honest description and a good picture. If the overall design is professional, believe me – it’s more likely that they place a bid. And at the end of the day – that’s all it counts, doesn’t it?

Dave's Final Thoughts

As you may have heard by now eBay have paid over $4 billion for Skype the online communications company. Some people are wondering exactly why eBay have made this purchase. There are some thoughts that eBay may incorporate Skype into their auctions so that sellers and buyers can communicate directly.

However, some observers believe that eBay had little choice but to act and act quickly to acquire Skype. This is because in recent months all three of its major rivals, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo have acquired technology, which allows their customers to communicate.

Even if eBay have difficulty in incorporating their new technology into their auctions they will at least have a very good stand alone phone business. We will watch developments with interest.

I hope you have found this months edition of interest and feel free to contact us about any matters relating to online auctions. .
