Editor's Note

Welcome to the third issue of UK Auction LIne News.
At the end of last month over 10,000 people attended the second Ebay convention held in Orlando, Florida. Only a few people from the UK were able to make it to Ebay Live, but by all accounts it was a highly successful event. Ebay hope to hold a convention in Europe next year, possibly in Germany. I will keep you posted.
As a follow up to the convention a full page article appeared in the Business section of The Sunday Times this week. This follows on from a piece which recently appeared in The Sunday Mail. Publicity like this can only make more peole aware of Ebay.co.uk and thereby attract more buyers and sellers, which can only be good for us all.

Since the last newsletter the new Ebay charges have come into effect, partly due to the addition of VAT to the charges. In this months Money Master Magazine the Editor Shirley Garlick talks about July and August being quiet months for Ebay whilst everyone goes away on holiday. I have to admit that it does seem a bit quiet on the selling front but what a great time to snap up bargains. Mark my words it will go mad from September so make sure that you are ready.

Finally we have spent some time looking for a suitable format for this newsletter. We have settled chosen this HTML layout because it is a nice clean easy to read layout. But if you have any thoughts about it please let us know.

Is it worth paying extra?
by Dave Bromley

You sit at your computer putting your listing information in and then comes that question, should you pay extra for some of the enhansement features. Is it worth the money to pay to have your title in bold or have it highlighted?

This has become an even more important question in the light of the new price structure which with 2 exceptions have been increased. In fact Home Page Feature has been increased by 150%, and to be honest I thought it was expensive at the old price.

Obviously this question has also been on the minds of American Ebay users because it was one of the hot talking points at the recent Ebay Live convention. Just to remind you the prices for enhansements are as follows: (The pre 1st July Price in brackets)

  • Homepage Feature (19.95) 49.95

  • Feature Plus (5.00) 9.95

  • Highlight (1.50) 1.50

  • Bold (1.00) .75 ( a Reduction!!!)

  • Gallery ( .15) .15

  • Gallery featured ( 9.95) 15.95

  • Buy It Now ( .05) .06

  • Sceduled Listings ( .10) .12

The reason for prices being increased at the mmoment is because from 1st July VAT had to be charged on these fees. But at the same time Ebay have taken the opportunitry to hike up quite a few of their prices.

In her Auction Riches Newsletter Robin Tungett gives some interesting statistics that she learnt at Ebay Live.

  • Those who use Bold for their auction title reported an average increase of 25% in the final sale price achieved.

  • Those who selected Gallery listing got an average final price of 11% higher than those who did not.

  • Highlight averages out to a final price increase of 15%

  • Gallery Featured items average to a final price increase of 19%

  • And feature Plus show a huge increase in final price of 47% ( so if you expect to sell your item for thirty pound or more this may be worth it.)

  • In the coming weeks I intend to test the use of bold in the Title and will let you know the results.. And don't forget we are always keen to hear of your experiences when listing on Ebay.
